.1 (Trigger Warning) Extreme Horror / Splatterpunk Mini – Reviews

Trigger Warning for extreme content & language

Read these novels at your own discretion

══════════════

i’ve been on a splatterpunk kick lately, so i thought i’d do some mini-reviews on the stories i’ve enjoyed so far.

i’m going to be doing multiple splatterpunk mini-review posts in the future, making this part numero uno.

just a quick definition:

splatter punk & extreme horror:

❝ …Known as the horror sub-genre with no limits, splatterpunk is gory, graphic, and violent…

~ bookriot

❝ …a literary genre characterized by the explicit description of horrific, violent, or pornographic scenes…

~ oxford

══════════════

currently making my way through some authors backlogs (Rayne Havok, Simon Mchardy, etc.) before i read any more new stuff.

here’s a few short stories, novellas & novels that i found notable & revolting.

══════════════

Mukbang Princess by Rayne Havok

published: 2021

10 pages

my rating: 4/5

TW: extreme violence, gore, detailed intense scenes

══════════════

two teenage girls, in an attempt to fame, consider doing mukbangs. They search the most viral videos and find one they will never forget, one from a profile called Mukbang Princess.

in just 10 pages, Havok makes your stomach turn in disgust. that’s a gift. what starts out pretty harmless ends in a nauseating turn of events.

it’s just a really fun, disgusting read. the main characters are your run-of-the-mill cliche teens…

❝ ‘I have an idea,’ I say, interrupting Jenn who’s scrolling on her phone.
‘An idea for what?’ she says, looking up for only a second before going
back to what she was doing.
‘An idea for how to get money.’
‘Oh, my gawd, we’re back on this again.’

~ page 1

…who have no idea what they’re about to see.

yo, it’s only 10 pages and it’s pretty messy, offensive splatterpunk. what more could you want?

This is Pure Fucking Filth by Sean Hawker

published: 2021

53 pages

my rating: 5/5

TW: extreme sexual themes/acts, gore

══════════════

there’s a creature lurking in the basement of the Blue Waffle Brothel, one that feeds on the poor saps who show up looking for a good time.

hilarious sexual deviancy at its best, in my opinion. this book made me laugh out loud!

❝ Donna was standing outside, under the neon BLUE WAFFLE sign. She was devouring a family-size bucket of fried chicken while wearing a twelve-inch-long strap-on.

~ page 14

it’s gross, it’s bloody, it’s funny as hell. i absolutely loved it, and would highly recommend to people with strong stomachs and a warped sense of humor.

Mother Maggot by Simon McHardy

published: 2020

126 pages

my rating: 5/5

TW: assault, incest, body horror, extreme sexual themes, gore

══════════════

Eddie is a sex-fiend, never satisfied fully, until he meets the big & beautiful Mother Maggot.

how could this not be on the list? it’s my first earnest adventure into splatterpunk, and i was not disappointed.

eddie is a downright degenerate who loves fried chicken and absolutely obscene sex. nothing can hold him back when he hears about MOTHER MAGGOT, half woman, half maggot. i mean, come on. who thinks of this stuff?

i physically grimaced at multiple points reading this, shock after shock after shock. yet, you can’t stop watching the train wreck, eddie being such a freak.

definitely read with discretion. this one’s fucking gross!

Sick Bastards by Matt Shaw

published: 2014

238 pages

my rating: 4/5

TW: assault, incest, detailed intense scenes, gore

══════════════

a family wakes up in a house in the woods, having no memory of who they are or how they got there. Turning to cannibalism to survive after their food runs out, our narrator laments on the depravity of the situation.

there is a lot of world building, character development, and inner monologues in this book, which isn’t what i expected. after a time, i actually got bored of the same, once shocking, themes.

until that twist! oh man, it’s worth it. i finished the book in a frenzy.

❝ Humanity will be the death of me but without it, I’d feel lost anyway so what does it matter?

~ page who fuckin’ knows

the writing is great, the execution is fine, the bombshell towards the end is a work of art.

Fucking Scumbags Burn in Hell (Book 1) by Drew Stepek

published: 2021

29 pages

my rating: 4/5

TW: child abuse, rape, gore, detailed intense scenes

══════════════

country, a man who’s walked the caverns of hell for who knows how long, is sent up to earth to try to fight heavens influence. things don’t go as planned.

the first in the series Fucking Scumbags Burn in Hell, this is a pretty great introduction to the horrendous, sometimes hilarious, Hell-world.

❝ He looked at me like I was a squirrel in a rat trap and pointed a new pencil at me. ‘I’m gonna call you Country.’
‘Why you wanna call me that?’ I started licking at my dry hands with my tongue.
He scrunched up his face, watching me. ‘Well, not exactly a southern gentleman, but you are a lil’ bit country.’

~ page 8

i read it pretty quickly.. it pulls you in, shocks you, makes you giggle, and then shocks you some more. the twist at the end, though disgusting, was sweet retribution. i love revenge stories so it definitely had to go on this list.

i’ll definitely be checking out the others in the series!

══════════════

other stories that live in my head rent free:

The Fires of Garbagehead by Tim O’ Neal – 4/5

Homeland is a strange little town with a secret, one that Dr. Gray stumbles right into.

o garbagehead, o garbagehead, get outta my mind. this story was awesome.

Necrosis by Rayne Havok – 5/5

men are ending up dead after visiting an exclusive strip club.

part detective story, part nasty sexual deviancy, this is my favorite (so far) of Rayne’s works.

Beast of Burden by Sean Hawker – 4/5

the nativity scene from the point of the view of the donkey.

this one is just downright offensive.. and hilarious. really pushed the envelope.

══════════════

would you read any of these? have you?

got any splatterpunk recommendations?

let me know!

thanks for reading !
